Fixed Rope

A fixed rope is the term given to a permanently attached guide rope. The fixed rope provides a known travel route for the climber.

The technique is expensive and labour intensive and generally restricted to high altitude mountains.

Access to most high altitude mountains (e.g. Mount Everest) is controlled by a regulatory body and fees have to be paid in order to take on the mountain. Costs of establishing the fixed rope is generally covered by these fees

The fixed rope has to be replaced on a regular basis due to damage from crampons and rock abrasion.
