Crevasse

A crevasse is a fissure or crack) in the ice of a glacier that is frequently hidden beneath a crust of snow. The crevasse is a constant danger for glacial travellers and it is the primary reason that travellers should be roped together at appropriate distances.

If a traveller falls into a crevasse the theory is that the combined weight of other travellers will be sufficient to arrest the fall and allow a rescue.
