Belay Methods

As far as belay methods are concerned there is one dominant method that is most commonly used. The “friction hitch” has grown in popularity as it is a simple, but effective belay method.

The friction hitch is also known as the Italian hitch or Munter knot and works on the ability of the hand to easily change the direction of a rope as it passes through the friction device.

Common friction devices include a Figure-8 descender or a belay plate.
