Ascender

An Ascender is used to traverse UP a rope. Often referred to as a jumar, the ascender device is used as a set that allows the climber to essentially sit and stand their way up the rope.

Ascenders are typically mechanical devices that lock on to the rope when weight is applied. However, prussik knots are an alternative form of ascender than can be used in an emergency.

Ascenders are often the cause of accidents when clothing or hair is caught in the mechanism.
